On Friday, February 14, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 20 eastbound in Columbia, South Carolina, resulting in the loss of a life. According to reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD), a person was struck and killed after running across the highway near mile marker 74.

The Incident

The sequence of events began when law enforcement officers pulled over the individual for a traffic stop. For reasons yet to be determined, the person exited their vehicle and attempted to cross the median into the eastbound lanes. Unfortunately, they were struck by an oncoming vehicle, leading to fatal injuries. The authorities have confirmed that there was no active police pursuit at the time of the incident.

Road Closures and Investigation

Following the accident, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) traffic cameras captured footage showing the closure of two right lanes near mile marker 73, creating traffic congestion as emergency responders worked at the scene. The case remains under investigation by the SCHP to determine the full circumstances surrounding the event.

The Safety of Large Vehicles May Surprise You: Bigger isn't always Better

February 6, 2025

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study challenging the belief that bigger vehicles are always safer. What to Do After a Car Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide

January 11, 2025

Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming. From medical concerns to insurance claims, it’s easy to feel stressed and unsure of what steps to take. At the Jessica Corley Law Firm, we understand the challenges you face, and we’re here to help. This guide walks you through the critical steps to protect your rights and well-being after a car accident.

1. Check for Injuries and Call for Help

Your safety is the top priority.

2. Move to a Safe Location

If your vehicle is drivable and it’s safe to do so:

3. Document the Scene

Gathering evidence is crucial for protecting your rights. Here’s what to do:

4. File a Police Report

Even if the accident seems minor, having an official police report can be critical when filing insurance claims or pursuing legal action. Be honest with the officer, but avoid admitting fault—it’s their job to determine what happened.

5. Notify Your Insurance Company

Report the accident to your insurance provider as soon as possible. Stick to the facts when describing what happened, and don’t provide a recorded statement without consulting an attorney.

6. Seek Legal Advice Before Accepting Any Settlements

Insurance companies may offer quick settlements that don’t fully cover your medical bills, lost wages, or other damages. That’s why it’s essential to consult a knowledgeable attorney who can evaluate your case and ensure you’re fairly compensated.
